ABSTRACT
THE ROLE OF FIXED INCOME SECURITIES IN INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS
This research investigates the role of fixed income securities in investment portfolios, focusing on: (1) the benefits of fixed income for portfolio stability; (2) the strategies for integrating fixed income securities into portfolios; (3) the challenges in managing fixed income investments. A survey design is used to gather quantitative data. Taro Yamane's formula is applied to derive a sample size of 310 respondents from Lagos, representing a mix of retail and institutional investors. A pension fund is chosen as the case study due to its substantial allocation to fixed income securities. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument is 0.88. Findings indicate that fixed income securities provide portfolio stability and steady income, reducing overall risk. However, challenges include interest rate fluctuations and credit risk. It is recommended that investors include fixed income securities in their portfolios, diversify across different issuers and maturities, and monitor interest rate trends to optimize returns.
